Metroid Other M To Be Rated M?

Over at Nintendo Everything, they seem to have scored an interview with  COO and President of Nintendo’s North American division, Reggie Fils-Aime, on the potential that this next Metroid game could be rated M.  Reggie says it’s possible, but I’ll believe a mature rated Nintendo developed game when I see one.  Here’s what Reggie had to say on the Team Ninja/Nintendo collaboration project:

“Big Metroid surprise. We’ve been holding this one very close to the vest to make sure that the surprise would be there. Not only the game itself looks fabulous but also this collaboration with Team Ninja, which has been very fruitful, very great work together. Not necessarily [M-rated]. At this point, it is very early, we said it’s a title that’s going to come out in 2010. Really, Project M is our internal terminology for the collaboration for what’s being done. Don’t read into it as to what the ESRB will be.”

Fils-Aime also spoke briefly about Mario Galaxy 2 and how it will offer unique new twists towards the game play.  He also tickled our fancy with support for Wii Motion Plus in Galaxy 2.

“There are new hooks to it. We’re not announcing exactly what those are. We showed a little taste of what happens with Yoshi, so that’s a new addition to the Galaxy experience. Will it work with MotionPlus or not? We’re going to keep you in suspense a little bit longer on that, but it is obviously going to advance the ball. We feel it has to in order to carry the Mario name.”

A mature rated Nintendo developed game would be an unprecedented achievement, and it would immediately quiet the nay-sayers who think Nintendo has lost their edge.  What better franchise to make this happen in than a game filled with a woman kicking ass in a futuristic suit with canons for hands!
