Sad confession to make. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures is the only real LoZ game that I’ve never played. When the game was released back in 2004, I was the only guy on my dorm room floor with a Gamecube and GBA. Seems that PS2 and XBox were the systems of choice at my college (but everyone still loved Melee and Double Dash). Anyways, I’m a late bloomer when it comes to multi-player Link i.e. I just bought the game for the first time last week. Having just played it for the first time today, it really makes me wish that Nintendo would have put out a Four Swords title on the DS. And while I do believe the game would work well for that system, putting a sequel on the Wii would allow developers to have more opportunities for engaging situations and clever level design.

If you’ve never played Four Swords Adventures, it goes like this: While chasing Dark Link, regular Link grabs the Four Swords creating three copies of himself (if you’ve played Minish Cap, you know the deal.) Dark Link then kidnaps the six maidens and Zelda and the four Links must work together to get them back. Or, they could sabotage each other for the sweet, sweet draw of force gems and glory. But it’s mostly co-op. The big draw of the game was the GBA/Gamecube Connectivity, which allowed up to four players to control their Link with the GBA and the action would be seen on the big screen through the GC. But when you went into a small room, the GBA screen would display the action of your character. This would allow players to sneak off into a secret room full of hearts and gems or be where a puzzle had to be solved. Either way, it was a great use of the GBA/GC connection.

A Wii version would obviously utilize the Wii/DS Wifi Connection. The game would play in just about the same way, but with touch screen control possibilities, the gameplay would certainly be more than just A Link to the Past clone. Taking the game online would be an even greater addition because there are many people who don’t have three other nearby friends with DS’s. Even if the game ends up just a New Play Control! title, it would almost certainly be a bigger selling game on this system than the last. Hopefully, the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii is successful enough to convince Nintendo to give multi-player Legend of Zelda another chance.
